Update on Trey, 11 month old baby newly diagnosed
Jun 15th, 2004 at 12:06am

Hi all.  Thank you all for all that you have advised and thank you for your answers to my questions and listening to me.

Today we went to see the Neurosurgeon at Children's in Birmingham.  The surgeon has scheduled the surgeries for next week, right on Tuesday and left on Thursday.  Trey will have to be admitted on Monday and the first surgery will be on Tuesday.  After the surgery we will go to the Special Care Unit for the rest of our stay.  We will not be able to stay with him 24/7 while in the Unit, they make the parents leave for an hour or more at shift change.  I can not believe that they would make us leave our baby and right after having surgery.  Maybe after the second surgery they may let us go to a regular room, but it depends on how he does.  They really expect him to be discharged on Friday.

The surgeon did say that he got the results from Trey's Spec Scan and it was not like he would have liked.  The medicine that was given that was supposed to open his arteries/viens/vessels up, instead of opening after the med was given his closed some.  It is not known why they did that and it concerned the doctor.  Because of this Trey is at a higher risk of a third stroke.

Trey is currently on Lovenox (blood thinner) and will stop taking in on Thursday of this week to get ready for the surgery.  He will be able to start taking it again after the second surgery.  So we are a little concerned about stroke happening due to not taking the blood thinner.

Of course this has been a horrible evening.  He is cutting a top tooth.  We don't know if this is why, but he has began to run a fever.  The Neurologist has told his Pediatrician that if his fever gets over 100.9 (I think that is what degree she told him) that he needs to be admitted for fluids.  Well, the fever has gotten up to 100.8, but is now 98.5 after one dose of Tylenol.  He has not been eating well today and has not really drunk much over the last few days.  He is a breast fed baby and I think he may be trying to wean himself because he has only fed once today and not much in the last few days.  He has only had 8oz of juice today and breast fed once and I can not get him to drink more.  His Pediatrician just told us to keep trying to force liquids (not working) and to be at his office at 8am.

Please pray for him tonight to drink.  Nursing would be great!!!!!!!!  Please pray for his surgery.  I am sorry that I have gone on here and talked in circles.

Thank you for listening and being supportive.

Michell

I'll keep praying for Trey.  When my son was born (3 1/2 weeks early), he had to spend his first 8 days in the neonatal care nursery, and we could not be in there during the shift changes either.  The reason is basically so that they can discuss your baby's care without you hearing more than you can handle hearing . . . not that it makes you feel any better to be shut out!  (And my son did not have serious medical problems of any kind.)

My heart broke every time I had to leave him in there overnight to go home . . . I called several times each night . . . so I can just try to imagine how you feel at being separated from him.  Still, your situation is far more serious, so I'll be keeping YOU in prayer too!

All my love and support,
Diane

Trey and your whole family will be in my prayers.

At Stanford they have the parents leave the ICU during shift changes also. They told me they didn't want parents to over hear the nurses discussing other patients.

Strong prayers being sent you way.

Trey is in my prayers...In the darkest moments, we may not have an answer to the riddle of suffering......But, we can surrender ourselves into the hands of One who does have the answers and who will faithfully walk us through the dark valley.......Trust in the Lord with all your heart........I will pray without ceasing.......Keep us  posted and God Bless You.....PatM Cry Kiss Kiss Kiss
