My son had surgery done in Dec in boston. He is now living here in florida We had to see a neurosurgen and a neuro dr  because my son started having seizures a month ago. They put him back on his meds had an MRA and an MRI done is showed a white mass around the stroke that he had last year. The new dr thinks it might be a viral of some sort so he ordered alot of blood work. Has anyone had seizures that far after surgery? I am so confused The MRA didnt even show that the new vain has even grown.I know that it can take 6-12 months to grow but instead of getting better his days are worse. Any insight would be great I am so confused

                    My daughter Mandy had a siezure 2 years after her surgery in Stanford, it kind of blew us away too. They said its from so much scar tissue in the brain from surgery and what not. Unfortunately it does seem to be a bit common to have seizures with this disease, but like everything every individual case is different.

I had seizures up to a year following.  Kept changing antiseizure meds and now have about 2/year.  Carbatrol workes best for me.  It is a high dose (1000mg day) but it works

My brother Jared had 2 EDAS surgeries last year, and never had seizures before that, that we know of. Last night in the car, jared started to fall asleep and it looked like his body kept jerking. When i called his name, he answered me, so he wasnt unconscious, but then it would happen again. I took him straight to the emergency room, and they said it sounds like a seizure. for those of you that have had seizures post surgery, do you lose consciousness? (my brother also has down syndrome so its hard for him to explain how he feels sometimes.)

From what I've read, yes you can be conscious during a seizure, you don't always lose consciousness. I also remember reading that there are alot of different types too. They’re divided into two categories—focal seizures and generalized seizures, and so many different types in each of those two categories, so in some cases, you may never really know what type of seizure you had or why they even occurred. A seizure is just sudden simultaneous, contradictory signals from your brain cells, and that could be caused by many different reasons for each person.

Jenny, thank you for the reassuring words.   I have only had one seizure, but I really worry about having another one, especially b/c I am driving again. 

I frequently have focal seizures in my right hand.  My fingers pulsate towards my palm.  Sometimes the seizures spread to my entire hand and even arm. During these seizures I am completely aware of what is happening and my surroundings.

Jaredsis2, I would do some research on the Internet about different types of seizures, b/c Mark is correct...one can remain conscious during a seizure.  Also, if it turns out that Jared was having focal seizures, I would not take that lightly; for as you will read, focal seizures can spread and the more seizures one has the more they tend to spread.  What I mean is that a focal seizure can become a generalized seizure.  I hope this is helpful, even if it is a little scary.
