Surgery Incision
Jun 20th, 2005 at 11:33am

Hi all:

I have another question, this time for those with surgical incisions from direct bypass.  As many of you know, I recently had direct bypass on both sides of my head.  How long did it take for your incisions to heal?  I still have parts of my incisions that slightly 'ooze' or lightly bleed (not dripping but just 'wet').  Not a lot but they don't seem to be healing.  They don't hurt but we're worried that it might be infected as we don't know if it's normal, and how long is the normal time frame to heal and the scabs go away.  Any information you can provide is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Trina

Hi Trina!

Thanks for the picture.

I thought I would reply to your question since both you and Kevin had surgery a day apart.  Kevin still has scabs but no leakage.  He did however, have swelling until just this past week which I thought was somewhat odd since the swelling on the right side subsided much more quickly. His incision bled after we got home but I thought that was from the airplane flight.  I'm no expert but I agree with you that possibly you have infection.  Perhaps some of the other post surgery folks can give
you a better sense of what is normal.

How's your mom and dad?  Be sure to tell them we said Hi.  Also, let your brother know we saw Dr. Bipin Desai and he remembered your brother and asked where he was located.  I gave Dr. Desai the info.

Take care and we'll talk soon.

Hugs

Lore

Trina-

I dont remember exactly how long it took my incisions to heal but i do remember it taking a while. One side especially took over a month atleast. Wish i could help with a better estimate but just be patient it will heal.

Thanks for the replies you guys!  I heard back from Teresa and she says that it could possibly be infected and to see my primary doctor.  I'm going over there today.

Lore, I'm so glad to hear Kevin is better.  I'll call you soon; it's been a while since we chatted!

Thanks to all who responded!  I went to my primary doctor on Tuesday and she does not think it's infected but gave me a two week course of antibiotics to help it heal faster just in case.  The right side is more 'messed up' than the left, but she thinks it's still ok.  She thinks maybe the hot weather around here as of late (and hence sweaty head) might have slowed down the healing.  Thank goodness it's cooled down!!  Smiley

Hi Trina,

Glad to hear no infection.  Tara's incisions took awhile to heal, and we may have told you already that she even had to have a couple of stitches placed at the bottom of her second incision.  She was leaking old blood that wasn't absorbed after surgery.

Anyway, glad you had it checked . . . better safe than sorry!  Hope it stays cooler in NY!

Hugs to you and your family,
Jill

Hi Trina,

Glad to hear that your head is ok.  LOL!  It's good news to know that it isn't an infection and that you were able to get some antibiotics.

Stay cool and away from that hot sun!  I wish it were cooling down here, but tomorrow it's supposed to be 99 degrees outside before the humidity.  UGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Please give your family hugs for me.

Hi Trina...all,

I had my drain tube taken out 2 days after surgery; however, I did bleed at the bottom of my incision for 2 days.  Luckily I was still in the hospital, so my surgeon decided to stitch it.  It was sore because he didn't give me any anethesia...(about 4 stitches).  He also prescribed K-flex antibiotics to prevent infection for a few days..You best believe that I felt EVERY stitch!!

My doctor put
Neosporin
on my incision when he took out my staples to help prevent infection.

I'm now about 3 weeks post op, and some scabbing is falling off.  I still have swelling and can't smile big or stick my tongue out all the way.  My right eye is also drooping....and I can't raise my right eyebrow.

I hope this helps.

Aloha,
SFH

Trina...it'll get better...it varies from one person to another...I had surgery on my head (cochlear implant)...and it oogzed stuff out it (3 inch incision )..kind of like honey, sticky...I was worried it was infected but was told some people give off more fluids than others.  I even got rash down my neck from this fluid but kept the shower water clean it off regularly and it eventually dried up...I had used neosporin too but had to discontinued for a while.  Took a while for it to heal...but eventually did...was hard especially with hair in the way.    Wink CarasMOM
