Is the SPECT w/diamox a common diagnostic proceedure ?

Also is this test done all on the same visit or is it done in two parts ?

Very confused about this...  I heard two different intrepretations & two different ways of doing the proceedure from the same hospital.
Someone please offer any info they have........... Mahalo !!!

  Blessings.

Hi Annie,

Yes, the SPECT with Diamox is a very important diagnostic tool regarding MM along with the angio and is very common.

In my experience, and hearing from others, it is usually administered in two parts.  One day a SPECT without Diamox and then the other day with the addition of Diamox.  It does not have to be in any special order though.

Hope this helps,
Lisa

Hi Annie-

Lisa is right about the SPECT. It is an important test and done in two parts one with Diamox and one without. There is another test similar to the SPECT called Xenon but i personally perfer the SPECT scan.

Annie,

LisaH is correct.  SPECT is a very important tool in the diagnostic (and follow-up) process of treating moyamoya.  You can see what the SPECT pictures look like by looking at the page with my scans: http://www.moyamoya.com/pictures.html

Generally, two scans are done.  One day with diamox and another day without diamox.

Hope this helps clear up the confusion!

Wow DJ!  Your pics sure provide a vivid image.  Thank you for sharing that with us!  It's amazing... I'm just wondering now why I didn't have this done.  I think, for the most part, it was because my situation was an "emergency" surgery.  I was being treated for facial numbness (MRI's showed a couple TIA's) with Plavix and then Aggrenox, and I was not told about the option of surgery until my THIRD opinion.  When my THIRD physician looked at my scans, he called me that Wednesday and said I had to have the surgery by that weekend..in a mere 2-3 days!!!  I really had no time to contemplate what to do next...

Take care,
SFH
