Balance

Does any one have problems with balance??  Even if I've been through physical therapy my balance is still not quite the same as it used to be.  I'm pretty good most of the time, just once in a while if I'm doing something it seems like my balance goes "off" and it feels like I'm going to fall over.  Just curious??   Smiley

Before diagnosis that was Kathleen's first symptom. She was off balance,in fact our first trip to the Dr. aobut this I thought she ahd an ear infection and it was causing the balance problem then they thought it was her thyroid(can cause a problem with balance too) but all were fine. She started to look "drunk" sometimes.

Hi Mary Grace,

I was just curious...it's only because I have these bouts with being "off balanced".  Sometimes I'm just a little lazy so I use my feet to pick things up.  I'm not sure if I'm standing on my right or left foot.  I still have some weakness on my left-side and that may be the side I'm standing on...I haven't really took notice on what foot I was standing on.  It may sound silly.  But every once in a while if I'm bending over to pick something up from the floor, I feel like falling over.  The first time I had vertigo, I thought I had and ear infection also(it felt like I had motion sickness).  The doctor said everything looked clear so he gave me a scrip for meclizine (something like dramamine). When I start feeling like I'm having vertigo I take 12.5 mg of meclizine.  It seems to help with the vertigo, but it always knocks me out.

Thank you..

Jan

Hi Jan,

Prior to Kevin going to Stanford for direct bypasses, he was really off balance. He would misjudge the hallway walls and other objects and actually walk into them. He also fell in the garage and bruised himself pretty badly. It was very scary. Mary Grace described it perfectly when she mentioned it was like being drunk. However, since the surgeries, Kevin hasn't been off balance other than when bending over. I suggested he not bend over even though it has been 6 months since surgery. I'm not exactly sure of the what and why of the balance thing now except Kevin had a significant stroke prior to being diagnosed. Before surgery it was most likeky the lack of bloodflow and oxygen. Like you, Kevin didn't have an inner ear infection but he could hear swooshing noises.

I'm curious to know if others have also had this problem.

During Kevin's next doctor visit, I plan to ask about being or feeling off balance.

Take care,

Lore

Hi Jan,
When I first presented at the hospital after my stroke the neurologist got me to walk heel to toe along a line - which I could not do without falling over.

Now four years after 2 bypasses on both sides, it still hasn't gone back to how I was before. With some of the  classes that I do at the gym, I have to balance on one leg and do a quad stretch and if I stay focused I can do it, but most times my balance is still off. It is not something that particularly worries me - it is just one of those things that you come to live with. It doesn't affect me during ordinary everyday things - only when I am making a conscious effort to balance on one leg or walk along a line
Regards Moira

Hi all,

Funny thing about balance.  I was doing really well while I was in physical therapy.  I was able to balance on the "bozu" ball (1/2 ball - 1/2 platform) on one leg (my weaker leg  Tongue).  I guess after my therapy sessions were over, I didn't keep up with all of the exercises (I got lazy).  I have to say I miss going to therapy...I had a lot of fun, but they sure made me work hard. Moira, I know what you are talking about walking heel to toe.  The therapists put foam platforms for me to walk on my
heels.  That was really hard.  They also made me jump/run in place with a bungee...that got me sweating.  But all in all I had fun.  I want to go back.

Jan-

Most of the time i think that i am well balanced but every once in a while i will get slightly off balance but never really thought about it til now. I guess if it happened more frequently i would have questioned it more. Guess i should keep an eye on it.

I know exactly what you mean.  I constantly trip and get
"tipsy"  I had 4 strokes and even after therapy I have not really improved. I have to just laugh at myself!  I was carrying a gallon of milk one day and I tripped coming up two steps, fell, and miraculously, my head hit the gallon of milk and broke the plastic jug, just about drowned me but I got up  perfectly unscathed .
