Newly-diagnosed in DC metropolitan area
Apr 5th, 2006 at 8:06pm

My father in Virginia has newly-been diagnosed with moya moya after suffering three ischemic strokes. We contacted Dr. Gary Steinberg's office who recommended bypass surgery, but we found out that Virginia Medicaid rarely approves for out-of-state procedures. We are still going through with the process, but was wondering if anyone can provide some guidance or help with it? Also, can anyone recommend any neurosurgeons in the Virginia/DC metropolitan area that we may get local opinions from? Thank you.

Hey there, sorry to hear about your father. Our situations are similar but different. My 10 yr old son has MM. January 2005 is when Nathan had his first major stroke. He was diagnosed with MM while we were on vacation in Tennessee. We live in Florida and have a FL insurance. He was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Hospital in Nashville. After all the tests, and Drs. saying Nathan has a severe case of MM on both sides of his brain and desperately needs surgery, we were told Tennessee does not except our insurance (even though our insurance would pay). Dr. Miracle at Vanderbilt  recommended  Dr. David Pincus at Shands University in Gainesville, FL. We came home and scheduled surgery. Our road is very rocky even after surgery, continued strokes and an aneurysm, but, I couldn't be happier with the care Nathan recieves at Shands. My only suggestion to you is keep pushing. Coming to this site was probley the best way for you to get information about your father's illness. God Bless you and your father. I have faith that you will find the right Dr. and the answers your father needs to get well. Just know your not alone.   Saundra
