Update on chicken pox.
Apr 13th, 2006 at 10:52am

Hello all
I sent a message a couple of weeks back with my concern over Chloe beacuse her younger brother had chicken pox.

Now Chloe has chicken pox, i went to the doctors yesterday and expressed my concerns over the connection between asperin and chicken pox.  He said there is nothing to worry about, but i could stop the asperin for 1-2 weeks and it would be okay.

Anyway to cut a long story short, i wasnt prepared to do this without first speaking to Chloes consultant (Neuro specialist).  He said he had been in a discussion and none of the Drs thought there was anything to worry about, the only thing he said was, there was a greater risk of stroke, whilst having chicken pox, and i should NOT stop the asperin ???
I am confused and more worried than ever.

Hi Jane,

I am sorry that you are going through this.  I have a  6 year old that recently had her surgery.

I know it's really tough to have to make decisions like that one.  I hope everything went well and Chloe is now doing fine.  As a mother all you can do is go with your gut instict in which way to go.  I'm sure you made the right decision.

Blessings,  MaryAnn

I know how you must feel.  When Daphne gets an infection we always worry about her increased risk of stroke.  Also, we've delayed her vaccines (for reasons I won't go into) so she is always at risk of getting chicken pox, measels etc., which scares me.

I don't know why Chicken Pox would be an increased risk for stroke, besides the same reason as ordinary viruses (possible dehydration).   I think the biggest factor would be getting Chloe to drink lots of fluids during this time.

Also, Reye's syndrome is pretty rare.  Just because someone in the at risk age group is taking aspirin at the same time as getting a virus, does not mean that anything significant will happen.  I got the chicken pox when I was four, and my parents gave me baby aspirin (as was recommended at the time).  I never had any problems.

Also, I thought I'd mention that shortly after Daphne's surgeries, she had an epidural hematoma (a bleed between the brain and skull) on the right side.  We discontinued aspirin for over a month, to prevent further bleeding, and Daphne was OK.

I will keep Chloe in my prayers.  Let us know how she does.

Jenny
