Could it be the Weather?

OK - Need some advise from my MM family.

I've had a persistent headache since Thursday. It's now Tuesday evening and I'm starting to get worried. It could be absolutely nothing....but it could always be something. Could it just be the changing weather?

Anway, I normally, post-surgery, do not have headaches. It feels like the pain is coming from behind my eyes - kinda of a pulling / pressure type sensation. I've taken tylenol, but it doesn't seem to work for very long. So, I've talked to my primary care doc...and he admittedly said it could be normal for anyone, but wasn't sure how quickly to react given my history and suggested I call Dr. Scott...which I've also sent an e-mail to him.

Any thoughts? I'm not worried enough to go to the ER, but getting there! Thanks guys!

Hi Shari,
I hope that I can put your mind at rest - I had my surgeries close on 5 years ago now and I still experience headaches. I have phases where I don't get any for a couple of months and then I have one that lasts for 5 days or more. I take heavy duty pain killers for mine as nothing else works. I have run this past my neurosurgeon and neurologist and neither of them can find anything related to my MM that is causing them. I have had MRI's and MRA's and my blood flow is fine, so they are not concerned that it is MM related. By all means check it out with Dr Scott as your piece of mind is what is important. Just a thought - your headaches happened over the Easter weekend, could chocolate have triggered it?

I wish I could help you, Shari. Every now and then I get a headache that will last all day and over the counter stuff doesn't help. It can also last for a few days. But I really don't think much about it.

Could it be stress?? Are you under a lot of pressure at work? It could also be from working at your computer too much in my opinion. I get lots of eye stress then.

I'm glad you going to see a doctor about it. Let me know what you hear.

Shari,

Even though it is not MM but a big restriction in the left MC1, I get headaches for days on end when the weather changes. However, my headaches are in the back of the head and not between the eyes.

I've also noticed that my vision is blurry when ever there is a change from high pressure weather fronts to low pressure and vice versa....if today is nice and tomorrow calls for rain, I know that my vision will be blurry tomorrow. Both my neuros said that anything brain related may/may not be affected by changes in weather.

I was misdiagnosed with MM in March of 2005. In January 2006, I was told it is not MM, but rather a massive restriction in the MC1 segment of my left carotid artery.

Thanks again everyone! It truly could be anything....needing a new prescription for my contacts...sitting in front of the computer too much (which is my job!)....sinuses....anything is possible. I guess my mind will be put at ease when I see a doctor. I made an appointment but it's not until May 4th - so tylenol will have to do for now. It's just crazy - anything that has to do with my brain makes me nervous a bit - at least extra cautious. Thanks again!

I'm sorry to hear you're having to go through this . . . definitely frightening to think of "the possibilities". May 4th probably seems a ways away, but it'll be here before you know it, and hopefully the headache is long gone by then!

Well....it's finally gone! My headache lasted about 10 days...whew! Coincidentially, I had my annual eye-doc check up on Monday. I mentioned my headace to him and he said it could very well be allergies.

I'm still keeping my appointment with this new neuro....as I no longer have a local neurologist I want to have someone, locally, that I can go to. (Going to Boston to see Dr. Scott (a five hour drive) is not feasible for a headache!)

Hi Shari,

I have surgery on Arp 7, last Friday I have a sharp pain come behind my head and headache in behind eyes, it also accompany w/ blurr vision, I also went blind for about 10_15 second, my surgeon suggest me to go to local ER, here they do MRI,MRA,CT and it look ok. My neurologist said that I have migrant and the usual of MM stuff, the headaches off & on for 4 days, he give me Lortab for it with is help and he also change my blood thinner to Aggrenox 25mg/ twice a day.
It good that you have appt. to see doctor, we need to have a local neurogogist, it do help a lot. Let me know what he say. Smiley

The neuro I went to didn't know anything about MM. Although he wrote me an Rx to switch from aspirin to plavix, I didn't fill it because he said he didn't know much about MM. So, my next step is to make an appointment at Hospital of Univ. of Pennsylvania where I was diagnosed.

Headaches have been gone for a while now....

I'm on Plavix also so that i won't get anymore clots..But as far as any headaches i haven't had one since my surgery back in Jan as far as sinus headaches and stress headaches i still get those. But Neurosurgeon had put me on Plavix before I left Mass Genral last July. But plavix works without aspirn cause i am allergic too aspirn. But as too the headaches i used too get that felt like 4 jackhammers on my skull(10 times worse than a migraine.)I have not had one since Jan.

Shari,

If it helps, my doctors at Columbia put me on Plavix after I was discharged from my hospital stay in January. Unlike asprin which thins the blood, plavix alters the red blood cells so they don't stick together....hence reducing the chance of a clot...or at least that is what the doctors told me.

So far, I haven't had any major reactions to Plavix, as I tend to be very susceptable to side effects of almost everything that I've tried in the past. Both of my neuros indicated that Plavix is only about 8% better at reducing the chance of strokes versus Asprin....but it does cost a lot more than a bottle of asprin. With my insurance, it is $50 for a three month supply (versus about $4 dollars for a 100 ct bottle of asprin at the local drug store).

You might also want to check on the member's maps area. If I recall correctly, there are a few members in NJ right outside of Philly...you might want to see which neurologists they are using....just a thought.

I hope all else is well on your end. And, if you don't mind, I might take you up on your tour guide of Philly offer this summer.
