High Blood pressure
Oct 16th, 2006 at 10:05pm

My daughter had her second surgery a month ago and all went well. However, her blood pressure is 142 over 98. Neurosurgeon says it is not related to Moyamoya. Now, lots more tests again to find out why then maybe a kidney specialist? Anyone here have any problems with high blood pressure?

hello,

My name is Bradley Micheal I am a 20 year old with MM. I had an indirect bypass about 2 years ago. I too suffer from I blood presure. Usually it was around 135 over 95 something like that but about 2 weeks or so I was in the hospital and it went up to about 140 over 95 something around there and thats with me on 2.5mg of blood pressure. The reason I was told for my high blood pressure is that my body is trying to force the extran blood to my head to make up for the lack of blood on the left side since that is where I had my surgery and the failure of it. When I went into the hospital it went way up to 160-170 over 100 give or take. This is what I was told though but obviously ever person and case is diffrent.

HI
My daugher was Dx'd in '99 at the age of 2 she has been hypertensive probably her entire life.

Have they checked her renal arteries?  My daugher's are /were both stenosed. She lost one kidney early one and her other is not doing well. Her Aorta is also too small and she had it partly replaced back in '04

My daugher also has Neurofibromatis those of us with NF are prone to hypertension too.

Hi, I'm 37 yrs old w/ mm. I don't have high blood pressure until after my 1st surgery on apr.  My was 150 over 98, my doctor said a little bit high blood pressure is good for me, but I still take pill for it.  I think my high blood pressure is MM related.

Sorry,a delayed response (back at work and not as much time)

I have had high blood pressure since my surgeries 12 months ago (not a problem before). My GP is baffled as to why??

I take medications to control it. I also eat as little salt as possible, reat a handful of almonds every day and I drink a lot of water - all supposed to help with hypertension.

Thankyou for starting this post - it makes me feel more normal to see other have the same issues!

regards

Helene

(god I LOVE this message board!)
I signed on to ASK the question if anyone w/ MM has had high BP trouble and Shazam! someone's already asked it!
My son is almost 10 yrs post-stroke/op for MM and 13 yrs old.  This past month while at the Neurologist's for a routine check-up they noticed his BP was elevated (135/80).  When I got home, I checked his recent sports physical info and found that it had been 130/84 then and they hadn't even mentioned it!  His pediatrician had us check it twice/week for a while and it remained in that same ball park so we had blood tests run last week along with a urinalysis.  I don't have all of his results back yet, but the UA, red and white cell counts were all ok.
When I look at the possible effects of high BP, it worries me for someone with MM (anurysims, stroke.....).  Anybody get any concerns about this (that it may be more dangerous for someone w/ MM) from their Dr?   Thanks!

sue
p.s. I forgot to mention that his BP had been normal his entire life thru his check-up in July 05. (highest ever was 110/58!)

Hi
My  daughter has MM and  neurofibromatosis  (NF) we discovered both at age 2.  My son Developed hypertension, he, knoock on wood,  shows no signs of MM. But he does have NF
If your child also has  NF, this makes him more likly to develop MM and/or hypertension..     I would make an appointment with a nephrologist. Cheyenne 10 is developing heart problmes and possible eye problems because she has been hypertensive for so long. It is very important to find the underling cause, if possible.

My son (9yrs old) just had his 6 month post-op follow-up with Dr. Steinberg.  He has had high blood pressure for the past 4 years (usually around 128/78 which is high for his age).  Dr. Steinberg did a "direct by-pass" because the indirect does not give the immediate blood/oxygen supply and flow.  The angiogram that he had two weeks ago showed the moyamoya vessels are decreasing, and new "good vessels" are being developed!!!  This is much more than Dr. Steinberg had hoped for so early after surgery!  Also, his blood pressure is now only 100/70~!  This is great for his age!  Dr. Steinberg said it's because his heart does not have to work so hard to get the blood to his brain now!  What excellent news. I'm telling you, Dr. Steinberg is the best!  Should anyone have any questions regarding their past surgeries, or current problems, please contact his office...they are so helpful and sure know what the hell is going on in the moyamoya world.  I speak from experience...no one here in Wisconsin could help my son!  So, we went to the best!

first week after surgery my BP was higher... then a month later, it was back to 80 - 90 range and my HR was still well over 100....  so I'd rather have high BP and lower HR. It throws me off a lot if I get dizzy.. I think my pressure is up like well over 120 lately with stress, tho

My pressure was very high for three years before I was diagnosed and had surgery.  I was on medication before surgery but able to go off of it after for about 6months.  My bp then started creeping up again so I was put back on medicine.  Then it was too low which brought it's own set of problems.  Now with excerise and low sodium, I'm able to currently stay off medicine but I take my bp at least twice a day.  Water has a huge effect on my bp also~if I don't drink enough, my bp will really soar!!

I have to bring this high blood pressure problem up again, I think it must have some thing to do with MM dx or bypass surgery because I don't have high blood pressure before but now my was around 178/100 Undecided, my family doctor put me back on medication.

Just to let you know that Roberts BP is higher since his dbl sta-mca by-pass. Not really high but high enough to catch the doctors attention...and we are keeping a log on it. I have read that higher BP on MM pt is a good thing but not dangerously high

I also have high blood pressure. I check mine three times a day. Had revascularization surgery in 2003 but also had a cardiac  arrest in 2004. Then a heartattack one year later. Fould out I had heart disease also. I am fighting two battles but I will get thru it one day at a time.

thanks for all the input on BP & MM!  It turned out that Kyle's was caused by his ADD medication (Strattera). It had probably been elevated for a little over a year since the Dr. had increased his dosage, but it wasn't caught sooner because we weren't having it checked routinely.  Once he was off the meds for a week, his BP returned to normal and stayed there until we tried another med (Imipramine).  Then the upper no. was fine but the lower no. was elevated (85-90) so we discontinued that, too.  The Dr. wanted him to try Focalyn, but I'm too afraid of the risk of him taking a stimulent and possibly having another stroke.  We still check his BP 1-2 X week and probably always will now.  Not sure what we're going to do about the ADD.  It's not too bad, but he does struggle a bit with school work.  That we can live with, another stroke............I don't think so.
May God bless you all - He's obviously not done with you yet! Smiley

for me mm was why my blood pressure was high about 150-160/90s, now it dropped down to 120-110/70-75.  so it'll totally vary for everyone and sometimes if you're blessed like me your blood pressure will actually drop to normal.
