Sleep
Jul 8th, 2007 at 3:48pm

I have not been on here for awhile.

I may have asked already, but does oversleeping cause symptoms?  I'm so confused.  I just switched headache meds, but I also don't breathe that well when I sleep.  Does oversleep cause numbness all the way down my side?  I know that being tired caused it.  Do tired eyes cause it?  Summer is always a complicated time of year.

Thanks.

hmmm.....well I can't say I have the luxury of oversleeping....I am somewhat on the "sleep deprived" side of things!

But I jumped in because I often have a symptom that appears during my sleep. My fingers, hands and sometimes partially up my arm goes numb. I mean fully numb! The docs have never given an explanation for this....but it is cronic and happens 60% of the time.

well....good luck...and sweet dreams to you!

Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that my husbands' breathing stops as well. He has sleep apnea. You should check into seeing if you have it because it can contribute greatly to your headaches.

What happens when you have sleep apnea is you do literally (depending on how severe your apnea is) stop breathing and when you stop breathing your brain is not getting the proper oxygen and blood flow which is what MM patients need.

My husband has had apnea for many years and since his surgery he has been unable to use his CPAP machine (CPAP machine forces his air ways open while he sleeps so as to get the oxygen needed) we are actually going to be at Stanford this Thursday to see if he may have to have surgery to open his airways up since he is unable to where the mask that comes with his particular CPAP machine.

Talk to your doctor and see if you do have it, if you do and are diagnosed with sleep apnea you may need to get fitted for a CPAP machine or as my husband possible surgery. My husbands pain doctor said that he believes Bob's apnea it is contributing to a lot of his severe migraine problems so we are hoping this appointment with Stanford is going to help.

The numbness could be caused by how you sleep. I sleep on my sides and I can get a bit of numbness like my arm is asleep. I asked my nuro and he said that I am pinching a nerve and that is why my arms fall asleep. He also recomended since i am a side sleeper to not sleep on my soft spot side if I can help it, and get a body pillow to "hug" so my arm doesn't fall asleep.

I don't know about over sleeping.
Hope this helps.

Ahh, it my favorite subject, my surgeon told me not to sleep on either side no more, so lie on my back is the only way( since I can't breath throught the pillow so the tummy sleep is out of deal) but still every night I would have my arm or leg or both numb. No doctor can explain why yet.

I can't recall any good night sleep without Ambien(wake up every hour or mind wandering around or lots of stupid dream), my neuro want me to cont. to take it so I can have a decent night sleep.

If I can have a sweet dream like eating banana split or munching on hersey chocolates I would be fine Cheesy

Not supposed to sleep on the side?  Yikes!  That's the only way Daphne sleeps.   We do have memory foam... maybe that helps lessen pressure??

I agree with Terry that sleep apnea should be looked into.   I know that with disturbed sleep seizures can occur more, I would assume that other neurological symptoms could be exaggerated if one is not getting to deep sleep.  Maybe you seem to be  "oversleeping", but in reality you are not getting quality sleep.

Since you say it's all the way down your side, I doubt it would just be normal pinched nerve (I don't have MM, and my arm or hand, or sometimes even leg will get numb/tingly while I'm asleep, but not all at the same time)

I'd also question the new headache med.   Did this just start when you began taking it?   I know that different things can affect how deeply you sleep (i.e. alchohol might help you fall asleep, but it actually makes you have poorer quality sleep, or at least that's what I've read)

Wish I knew more!

Just chiming in....I too had problems with tingling arm/fingers/toes when ever I slept.  I discussed with my neurologist....where I indicated primarily in my left arm/hand/fingers......but minorly in all toes and fingers.

Ended up having two test done. First was an MRI of the neck which indicated moderate artheritis in the C5/C6 left vertibrate, hence the primary tingling on the left hand/fingers....tylonol before bed works on this....

I also had a sleep study done which indicated in having sleep apnea. I have a sleep apnea machine which helped get the oxygen into the system....used it religiously and the remaining tingling in the toes and fingers went away....(I must confess that I don't use my CPAP machine that much any more.....) I will say that not only did the CPAP machine help with the tingling....I also felt much more awake in morning....not tired and fatigued as I did before.

Good Luck,
Greg

I was misdiagnosed with MM in March of 2005. In January 2006, I was told it is not MM, but rather a massive restriction in the MC1 segment of my left carotid artery.

Thank you everyone for all of your wonderful replies. Whenever I have insurance enough to cover these doctors appointments or doctors that care and time I will look into this further. I also have other pertinent medical conditions needing looking into.  Does it ever end with us MMers?

"Does it ever end with us MMers?" I ask that question myself.  I have appt. to see rheumatoidlogist(spell) on september, due to my arms and/or legs pain come and go like those TIA spell, it seem like a streem illness connection with unexplaination.
