Other Surgeries, after MM Surgery?
Jan 9th, 2008 at 11:09pm

Has anyone had surgery after their MoyaMoya surgery?  I'm curious, because Holly is scheduled for surgery this month on her hand, and I just wanted to know any precautions that others took before surgery.

Thanks

Hi
My daughter has had 4 surgeries other than the 2 for MM. Make sure the Anesthesiologis is aware she has MM.  Apparently it is important to watch the CO2 levels in MM kids than inthe general population.

GOOD luck

Yeah I've had other surgeries after my MM surgery.
The only thing you have to be aware of is the anaesthetic. There is a particular way that it has to be administered to MM patients, and it is a good idea to get the anaesthetist who is doing the new surgeries to talk with the one who did your daughters MM surgeries. I was lucky enough to have my anaesthetist along with me for my caesarean for my second child (phoned him up and asked him if he would like to be part of my neonatal team and he applied to the hospital I was going to, with full blessing from my obgyn. ) The other surgeries I had, I got the anaesthetists to liase with him beforehand and the surgeons knew of my MM problems. (I had grommets put in my ears, then had them removed and also had a boob job and a baby!)
Good luck

Thank you for the responses, I gave the orthopedic surgeon numbers to contact for her current neurologist, nuerosurgeon as well as Dr. Steinbergs office.  I'll definately be making sure that everyone was contacted ahead of time.

yup i agree make sure the anasthesia dr. knows about the mm and then they know what to expect.  i had my mm surgery  then exactly 1 week later i had major knee surgery and the anasthesia dr was awesome, i had i after effects at all.  i talked to the ortho prior and asked her who was the ana dr. and she made sure she had the best on and yes he was good.  good luck!!!

Hi,  I had to have a defibrillator put in a year after I had bypass surgery. The anesthesiolgist was aware of it and took special care. I had a colonascopy last year and they did it in the hospital so they could have an anesthesiolgist who knows about mm.

very informative thread. i have a procedure coming up that requires general anesthesia, and i haven't "gone under" since my double by-pass for MM in 2005.  i have NOT consulted with my dr. regarding the anesthesiologist, so i will get right on top of it!  ;Grin

thanks hillary and others for responding!  good info!

take care,
