Moyamoya and Ibuprofen
May 29th, 2008 at 9:34pm

Has anybody heard that you shouldn't take Ibuprofen if diagnosed with Moyamoya?   Smiley

I haven't taken Ibuprofen since my double by-pass in 2005 and am just curious to see if anybody has heard of this...

Thank you,
Shan

Hi Shan,
I have heard this too so I don't take it at all - you have to check as it is present in most headache stuff

Shan - I've heard this too but I thought it was more because if you are already taking a blood thinner, like aspirin, ibuprofin will thin your blood even more as it, too, is a blood thinner.

I would check with your doc.

I distinctly remember being told to not take Advil or any ibuprofen, but a friend of mine was told that Tylenol can contribute to liver problems, and being on Lipitor, that is a concern. so I guess I will just bite a leather strap or a bullet:-)

I would check with your nurologest and ask. Some medications react diffrently with others. Like the Ibprofin with blood thinners. One would hope that even medication for illnesses like strep may have sideeffect with the medication you are currently takeing and the doctors should know. Good luck.

thanks for all the replies!!  ;Grin  i will ask my neuro at my next appt.  looks like for the most part, ibuprofen shouldn't be taken.  i'll let you know what my neuro says...

as for aspirin and my blood thinning...i'm still taking 325 mg aspirin and Aggrenox.  only thing, i'm also developing gastritis/ulcers  Embarrassed which could probably be related to these.

anyone else experiencing stomach problems??  Cry  and if so, what do you do or take?  i'm taking nexium and mylanta until my endoscopy/colonoscopy in 2 weeks...

thanks again for all your replies  Wink

Hi Shan!

I work as a counceler in cancercare and have learned that aspirin is a well-known trigger for ulcus/gastritis. My daughter who has moyamoya since 2002 is taking aspirin daily as there is no other oral blood-thinner in Sweden recommended for children. As soon as she reaches adult age, 18 or so, I will ask her doctor to change it to somethong else, for example Plavix, a very expensive but effective AND mild (as far as it comes to sideeffects) bloodthinner. Take care of yourself and your stomach! Wink

Hi Shan, I took aspirin 325mg as blood thinner, and I have problem with my stomach also, I don't take any thing for it but I stay away from spicy food and coffee, it help me.

My neurogogist told me do not take Ibuprofen, he did explain why but I don't remember what he said Smiley, if you find out from your doctor please let me know.

Shan -

I have been on prilosec for at least 10 years now - I've had really bad acid refulx almost all my life.  I'm guessing that is helping me with any other irritations that may be caused by the aspirin.  I am only taking 81 mg though.

Hey Shan,

I was also told not to take any ibuprofen (advil, motrin, etc.) after my surgeries.  I pretty much stay on my regiment of baby aspirin and I'm okay with that.

hi shari,

i know i'm replying verrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyy late--but i too was taking prilosec 2x a day for a few years, but i have recently switched to nexium.  i guess my body became immune to the prilosec.  is it still working for you?

i was having stomach pains--my dr. said probably due to the aspirin (325 mg) and aggrenox (also contains aspirin) and nicacin that i take--all of which upsets and can cause gastritis/ulcers in one's stomach.  thererfore, he switched me to something stronger (nexium).  i also had a colonoscopy and EDG last week.  good news! no ulcers, but i do have gastritis....

hope all is well...

take care,
shan

my son has been having stomach problems the last few months.  He is on coumadin, aggrenox, and 2 baby asprin a day.  They thought it was his gall bladder, then they did a CT angiogram and discovered that he actually has moyamoya in his bloodvessels in in bowels.  They are trying to figure out if they can do a bypass surgery to supply more blood down there.  The Dr's have not found anyone else with moyamoya anywhere else but the brain, so this is causing delay in surgery.  Has anyone else heard of the disease being found in other parts of the body?

Aloha Soccer man Sam,

Wow--no, I personally have not heard of MM in other areas other than the brain.  Smiley  However, I was advised that since MM is a vascular disease, when I tore my achilles tendon and was in a cass--my medical team took extra precaution (via ulta sound) to ensure I didn't have any blood clots along my leg/thigh since I was not able to exercise/move it.   I don't believe they were specifically looking for MM, but more concerned of blood clots forming...

I hope you don't mind, but I am going to post your reply in a new thread in hopes that others may read it and respond.  I think many may overlook your post as it is currently located under my post regarding MM and Ibuprofen.

Take care..and I hope that we (members of this site) are able to help you find out more info with your post.  As always, seeking additional opinions is encouraged.  Wink

Aloha,
Shan .

in only ever take paracetamol, and often a lot of that. i think the only concern with ibuprofen, is it says to consult your pharmacist or someone if you are also taking aspirin. as far as i know it wouldn't cause any real concerns for mm patients. just ruins my stomach that's all.
