Pre and Post Surgery
Jun 25th, 2008 at 6:13am

Hello everyone.  Thanks for reading this message.  My wife has just been diagnosed with Moyamoya and she will most likely need surgery (according to the doctor).  Thankfully she hasn't had any strokes yet so we are hopeful all will be well.  What should we do to prepare for surgery?  My wife is also worried about post-surgery life.  We have two young children (4 and 1.5) with lots of energy.  What should or can we expect after surgery?  If anyone has any experience with this, any information would be very helpful.  We are living in Osaka Japan and we will be having our surery here as well.  The doctor said my wife will most likely have to be hospitalized for 2 weeks post surgery.  Best wishes to all.  Matthew

Mathew,  Post surgery recovery is largely affected by pre-surgery condition. My strokes that lead to my EDAS procedure in 2000 resulted in only minor deficits. I was 40 yrs old at that time. I was in the ICU for less than 2 days and was discharged from the hospital in 4. MY energy levels and stamina were low for quite a while but I'm not sure that was solely due to the surgery.  Some may be due to the strokes and some was emotional.    I wish the best for your wife, you and your family.

Hi Matthew,
My daughter was in the hospital a total of 6 days before her surgery and 14 days after her surgery. Her case from what I read is not the norm. She was only four years old and had several strokes before hand so possibly that is why she had a long hospital stay. She also had complications for months afterwards. She is now six years old and doing wonderful.

Hi Matthew,

I was 42 years old when I had my stroke and was diagnosed with Moyamoya.  I had my surgeries on 04/19/06 and 04/26/06 (I was 43 years old) .  After both surgeries, I was released on the 4th day.  I have been doing very well (no complications) since.  Your wife may not be able to do much for a while, but as soon as she's able to...I'm quite sure that she will do just fine.

Best Wishes,
Jan Takeuchi
