Blood Pressure?
Jul 21st, 2008 at 3:40pm

Just curious to see if anyone is having issues with their blood pressure--or if their medical team has advised them of what their "target" blood pressure level should be?  In the beginning, I was advised that due to MM, it was okay for my pressure to be a little above the norm of 120/80.

I was recently advised that my systolic should remain above 110.

Please let me know your thoughts...  ;Grin

Take care,
Shan

My nurologest said not to worry unless it gets realy bad.  Like if i am at the doc for something else and it is out side my normal fluxuation. then I need to talk with him about if my brain blood flow is may need to be checked out agian. All I take is 81mg of asprin a day. I hope this helps I know it isn't much.

Yep, BP is a constant concern. I stopped the 40 mg of benazapril after surgery and for awhile everything was going pretty well. I've been told to shoot for a pressure in the 130's/80's range - with 140's being OK. I'm on 5 mg of benazapril since a few months post-surgery, but the pressure is ooching up again 150's -160's/80's-90's.(nine month post-surgery). Saw my PCP yesterday, he wants me to keep a careful record over the next couple of weeks, make sure that I continue my exercise routine, then he'll consider increasing the BP medication slightly. He said it could be related to my body adjusting to the estrogen changes that come with this peri-menopausal thing. Dr. Steinberg wants my BP a little high to keep the blood flowing, but not this high, I think. It's likely that the BP goal would be different for every person with moyamoya.

My blood pressure has always been on the low side.  In fact my BP going into surgery was just 102/65.  I've always felt good.  My surgeon was initially somewhat concermned but told me even prior to my surgery that my body was obviously handling the low blood pressure well.  Believe it or not my blood pressure has been as low as 84/60 something and I felt fine at the time.  I generally go by how i feel.  Which is generally really good.  When I was just out of surgery the nurses were concerned about my blood pressure and had me worried all night.  When my surgeon came in in the morning he explained to them that my baseline was generally low and to just continue to monitor it.  I worried for awhile about my blood pressure because my surgeon did say it was better to have a BP a little on the higher side but as time went by and i continued to feel good i stopped worrying.  I keep hydrated and have fun living my life.

The night of my first surgery, I had 4 TIAs all related to my blood pressure getting to low.  Once they tied the two together, they kept a careful eye on it.  I normally have good blood pressure, but they are concerned about what may happen if it gets low again.  Since the surgeries, I have maintained good pressure.

I have BP also, my is up and down all the time, it not steady, it can be 140/92 and one hour later it be 110/75, and it can be low like 105/60, it up and down make me tired and headache, I took Atenolol 25mg every morning, I feel much better, my doctor said moyamoya patient need to have a little high BP, he said it can be up to 140s/90s.
I listen to my body and check my BP when I feel something "sneaked up" in me ;Grin

The pressure' on!

I was told (by Steinberg at Stanford) to have my goal bp at about 140-150/80-90 to keep the bypass open and flowing.

Was a scary time getting used to actually having that range as a goal vs being in a potential of stroke bp range.. I'm comfortable with it now and also keep close check on it.

I am alert for nurses who 'tisk tisk' at my higher range/goal. Or who seem to want to keep the pressure lower.

I have a medical sheet that I carry with me (need to get the bracelet soon as it could be a live saver) that says on the top
"Due to MOYAMOYA DISEASE --avoids vasoconstriction and keep BP elevated. maintain Blood Pressure at 140-150 / 80-90"

The sheet is pretty cool as it lists my meds, when I take them, the dose, etc

also info on husbands name, phone, etc. Avoid bood thinners, and vasoconstrictos like epinephrine, use Tussin DM for coughs, etc...
friends, doctors, pharmacy,  ALLERGYS  -- contrast solution for angiogram/ SPECT (urg!!!!) , date of by-pass and vena cava filter, stroke dates, Phone numbers to everyone.....

It's really a help when going to appts -- I just have then photocopy it and all the info is right there in an easy to access format.

I feel 'sluggy' when my bp is low. This isn't a medical solution, but a tiny dab of salt can help (I cringe when I were this as I'm sure there's a better solution).
Keep the H2O going!!!!

So hope everyone keeps their bp where it should be and I rellte to the struggles about all this.
