moyamoya and cerebral palsy

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone else has moyamoya as well as cerebral palsy.  My son has cerebral palsy.  He is 7 and through all his years, every single therapist he has had has said he is so atypical of any kid they have seen.  He is very mixed tone as well as spastic throughout all 4 limbs.  He has dystonia and ataxia which are involuntary movements of his limbs.
Just last week he was diagnosed with moyamoya after having an mri/mra due to some cognitive regression.
Has anyone else had cp along with moyamoya?  I am wondering if some of these symptoms are related?
My son was also dx deaf at age 1 - even brain stem tests showed this, but he is not?  Could this be related?

Hello and welcome to the moyamoya family(sorry you have had to find us though). My daughter was diagnosed with MM when she was almost 5 yrs old.I'm not sure exactly when her symptoms started because they could have been masked by her Down syndrome. Her scans showed earlier small strokes that we didn't even see.It would have been hard to see small regressions in her abilities because she wasn't always consistant in her abilities. It would nto be unusual for a child with Down syndrome to show regression or "Plateau" in certain areas. Her first symptoms that we noticed were an unusual change in her wlaking she got very unsteady progressing to the point she was walking into things and couldn't control her arm.(she would reach for something and it would take several tries to get it kwim?)My point is could his CP symptoms have been caused by MM from the beginning. From what I understand, babies have strokes and are considered to have cp from the traumatic brain injury.I belong to an e-mail group which consists of so many children with CP caused by a traumatic brain injury(stroke) either soon after,at,durring, or even before birth. Can I ask when your son was diagnosed with CP?My daughter has "mixed tone" also. Some joints are soooo loose, and others are so tight she can't control it. Aslo the harder she works at something the tighter she gets. She ahd several strokes before she her surgeries but ahsn't had one since.she's been stroke free for 6 yrs now.I hope I made some sense here and didn't confuse you feel free to ask about anything your unsure of and most important take a look at the links for MM experts.
