Hi

Moyamoya results in strokes, not epileptic fits as far as I know. Moyamoya is diagnosed by a neurologist after brain scans are done. The type of scans from which moyamoya can be diagnosed are MRI, MRA and angiogram with dye. The angio with dye is the best but with a child they will need to be put under anasthaetic to keep them still while scanning.

The biggest problem lies with neurologist not familiar with moyamoya. You need to try to convince your doctors to do the brain scans and then you need to get the results to a neurologist with moyamoya experience. All of the doctors listed on this site will give you an opinion free of charge.

Good luck and stay strong

Hi,

Yes, children can have seizures with moyamoya.  My daughter had several and then also had a stroke.   At 15 they sent us to a neurologist for testing after what they thought was another seizure to be put on medication.  It was then that we got the diagnosis.  Just hang in there and get her scans to a specialist.  My daughter had her surgery with Dr Steinberg a year ago tomorrow.  She is doing great.  Keep us posted.  My thoughts and prayers go with you and your daughter.

A person can be diagnosed as having epilepsy simply because they have repeated seizures that start in the brain. Over 50% of the time the cause of epilepsy is unknown, so it’s important to note that seizures are one of the symptoms of MMD. So proper testing should be done. The angio is the definitive test for diagnosing MMD.

If your daughter has MM, she is at risk for more strokes and needs to be treated ASAP by an experienced MM neurosurgeon.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.
