Still not feeling good.

Hi everyone, how are you? I am writing because I have been experiencing difficulties since my last surgery of a year ago. I always forget the name but it is the one where they lay the muscle down and hope to grow veins. My first surgery was a direct bypass on the right side. I had that surgery 3 months before the second. Dr. Rassmesen at the Cleveland Clinic was my surgeon. He did a great job. When I had my 6 month follow up, he told me that I had "adequate" blood flow. I still am not sure what that means. I am having extreme headaches about once every two weeks and everyday I have at least a moderate headache. I have been rushed to the Cleveland Clinic by ambulance since my last surgery and they keep me for two days for observation. I am also having some of the same symptoms that I had before the surgeries. I have gone numb on my left side and I experience sound loss at the same time. I have fortunately not had any strokes to date. I am scheduled for another MRI next Friday. There is one other major problem. I also have a Chiari Malformation. It is when your Cerebellum is to large for the cavity in your skull. It is being squeezed out of where my spine comes into my brain. Therefore, they do not know which is causing my headaches. I guess the real question I am asking is, does anyone know how fast Moya Moya progresses? Am I inevitably looking at more surgeries? I know that I am not feeling well at this point. Any advice? Thanks for listening.

Hey,
I am so sorry to here you are having these problems, my daughter was diagnosed in 2002 with MM and had the revascularization surgery done on the right side of her brain. She had headaches and other little symptoms every once and awhile until school started in 2006, she was in 4th grade at this time and started having more headaches and fainting spells at P.E. and recess, it was still hot outside so we thought this might have contributed to the fainting spells. She started having other symptoms and her NL did a Diamox Spect. It came back fine. Symtoms got better as the weather cooled down. Then one Sat. night the beginning of Jan. she started complaining a finger on her right hand was hurting and feeling funny. The next day it still was so the ped. on call said to call her NL on Monday. They did an MRI the next day and said the blood vessels on the left side and up the back were now (5 years later) affected.  But they wanted to do an MRI of her neck on Wed. cause they saw something else wrong. I will get back to that. Anyway through prayers (which I believe in 100%)her angiogram showed that the blood flow was fine and that the MM had not progressed.  Now back to the new problem they found. These MRIs showed that she also has a Chiari Malformation, Syrinx, and Basilar Invagination. She had the decompression surgery a couple of weeks later and after some post surgical problems she is still doing fine. She has resumed normal activities other then not having anything tight on her head that could restrict blood flow(MM) such as softball helmets and goggles. But we can deal with that. But when she does have headaches and aches and pains we are in the same boat as you with wondering is this from the MM or the Chiari or just the normal aches and pains that everybody gets. She actually goes tomorrow for her annual MRI and we will see the NL afterwards to go over the results. Sorry to rattle on,I think you are the first person I have found that has both MM and Chiari. I also go on www.asap.org for the Chiari in case you haven't found that website.
To answer your question though I think MM progresses differently for everyone.
Have you had decompression surgery?
Good luck with your MM surgery.

Hi Tina,

How are you? I am sorry to hear about your daughter. It always makes me rattled when I hear about a child going through this stuff. I know how hard it was going through the surgeries, I couldn't imagine how it would be being that young. I have not had any decompression surgery yet. I am still waiting for the surgeons to decide what to do with me. I actually emailed Dr. Steinberg tonight to get another opinion. I am really at a loss. I am worried that I might lose my job because I have missed so much time. The only thing that I do know is that I don't feel well. I have lost a significant step since the second surgery. I am tired all of the time. The symptoms are starting to come back and I am worried sick. This site is certainly a great resource. I still have a lot to learn. The problem is that I am only one year out of surgery. If the symptoms are coming back already, that can't be good. I guess I should look at the bright side and be grateful that I haven't had a stroke. Well, thanks for responding, I appreciate it. Please let me know how your daughter is doing. Let her know that she is not alone. We have something in common, although I wish it were something a little nicer, lol. God Bless and thanks again.
