Kathleen's strange health issues.(update)
May 8th, 2011 at 10:35am

Not sure if you remember the problems she's been having from my post a few weeks ago. She seemed to be getting better for a few days. Monday she started the crying again unconsolable and holding ehr belly. It got worse as the week went on. she missed a lot of school being late or coming home early. She really wanted to go to school. Yesterday she cried ALL day unconsolable wanted a warm towle on her belly and for me to rub ehr back. She didn't eat much all day and never got out of bed. Later in the day I went ot the market and my DH called and wanted to take her back to the ER. It had gotten worse. By the time I got home she was on the tiolet crying and had aweful diarhea. this continued all night I had to give ehr a bath twice because she even did it in her sleep. She also got her period. this seems to be the common thread I was looking for, her period. I', thinkng it may be related to ehr period hormones in some way. I feel so aweful for her she's been in such pain on and off for over a month with only a week or so of good days. She woke up and was pretty quiet this morning and is now back to sleep.

I've talked with kathleen's primary care DR. and she's scheduled for an ultrasound on Thursday

Sorry to hear about this. Poor girl! Have you tried to talk to her doctor about this? It must be scary for her and you! I wouldn't hesitate to take her to the er if needed.

I know I can't be of much help to you, but I feel for you and your daughter. Good luck and hopefully all works out and she will feel better.

She had her ulstrasound yesterday and now I wait to hear from her dr. Her period ended a couple days ago(was really only spotting which is so not like her). Her belly pain continues though. She has not had a BM since her diarhea Saturday. I know one thing we need to test her for is celiac disease. Children with Down syndrome are 25% more likely to have celiac than the general public. But when it looked like everything got worse around her period I kind of put it on the "backburner". I actually looked it up and celiac can get worse durring your period even if you've been gluten free. This is all so fustrating! I wish she could tell us more about how she feels.

Mary Grace,

Christopher has celiac disease also! He was diagnosed 2 yrs ago. The only reason I found this out is because he started to sleep 12 to 14 hrs a day! I took him right to the dr having no clue what was wrong. Christopher also always had very bad diarhhea since he was a baby! No doctor ever suggested to ahve him tested for Celiac Disease. He also wasn't growing much, which we found out that Celiac disease could also stunt your growth. They did blood work and that is when Celiac was discovered, his blood count for this was through the roof. We were told he needed to have an endoscopy done to confirm Celiac. Well, when they did it (they have to be put to sleep) they couldn't get all the way into his stomach because of scar tissue from surgery when he was born. So, the results were negative. But, his GI doctor said he def. had Celiac. We have tried to make his diet 100% gluten free, but it is very hard for him. He is a very picky eater and most gluten free food tastes terrible! But, since we have been keeping him on a gluten free diet, as much as we can. The diarhhea has stopped! He may have it now and then, but nothing like before. And he has started to grow! I also found out that people with ds have a higher risk of having Celiac and so the doctors should always be checking for this, which our pediatrician never did!

If you ever need to talk or just have questions, I am here to help if I can.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. kathleen's ultrasound looked OK. They couldnt' find her right ovary but didn't think it was a problem(it doesn't mean that it's not there).
The dr. told us to try Miralax. thinking the diarhea is being created from the constipation. Constipation causing a blockage and then diarhea forms behind it because the body is trying to pull water into the intestine to pass the BM. Sounds OK and I"ll give it a try but it doens't seem to explain everything. including the sudden onset, and change in her period. Also I don't really want to use Miralax the rest of ehr life so what happens when we stop using it? Of course these are the things that come to mind after our conversation. I'm still confused...

Hi, I hope your daughter is feeling better.  Just wanted to mention something about the Miralax.  Our 3 year old has been on it for over a year.  He has always had issues in that department.  The ped. had assured us that it is very safe.  Apparently a lot of kids take it and you can take it safely for a long time.  Good luck!

I have a daughter with urinary reflux and she also tends toward constipation.  Being constipated increases the chance of a bladder or kidney infection so we have to take measures to prevent it.  I have found that a high fiber diet works wonderfully!   There are many foods that have extra fiber added so we buy those.  There are a kind of granola bars that are her favorite.  There are also some gummies that are fiber that we give her sometimes--she thinks they're candy!

I hope you find what is behind all of the pain your daughter is experiencing.
