Fainting?
Dec 9th, 2011 at 9:33pm

Hi all - my daughter who is 10 was diagnosed with mm at age 8.  She has had surgery twice in 2009 and has been doing pretty well.  Today she fainted at school.  Took her to the Children's hosp here they said it was a regular fainting episode (teacher thought she was having a seizure).  ER doc not concerned.  Anyone experience fainting episodes?  Thanks in advance!  Jody

Gosh I think that would have scared me... What kind of workup did they do to come to this conclusion? What made the teacher think it was a seizure? Was there seizure like activity before this happened. Also What is a "regular fainting episode" and what causes a "regular fainting episode"?  Personally I think I would want some real tests showing what caused it. Will you be following up with her surgeon or neurologist? Just some questions that come to mind... Praying it was just a one time thing...

Mary Grace - Exactly what I want to know - no real work up just a neurological exam.  We are definitely following up with our surgeon Monday although he is in Texas and we are in Kansas.  The teacher saw her arms shake, she fell flat on her face (was standing), and her eyes stayed open - I think that is what made everyone think it was a seizure except for the Dr.  It was about 4 hours before she was acting like herself, but by the time we got to the ER (about 20 mins after she fell) she was acting pretty normal but of course the doc doesn't really "know" her.  Thanks!  Jody

I'm glad to hear that you will be following up with the surgeon. YOu deserve to ahve real answers. It may be helpful too if you(and school) take note of any further changes that look seizure-like. Also if the school writes what they saw happen. I believe things like this have to be written up anyway at school. I've been very sceptical of ER's actually taking anything seriously enough when it comes to moyamoya. Do you have a local neurologist? WE have one locally just for this reason. We see him once or twice a year and always talk about protocol in an emergency and MM education. This way if we need to go the ER docs ahve someone to talk with about care. Kathleen was dizzy last spring and they took this very seriously in the ER (after getting ehr background)and admitted her for testing. Good luck and keep us posted.

Neurosurgeon just called - he reviewed her last MRI/MRA from November and said he agrees it was most likely just a fainting episode.  He did say we should probably consider her not playing flute.  But at least we are more confident that she is doing well healthwise!
Thanks!
