MoyaMoya support in Australia
Jun 15th, 2012 at 3:48am

My 7 year old daughter has been diagnossed with MoyaMoya. We are in Perth and finding it hard to get information. She had a stroke 5 weeks ago and due to the lack of information we were sent home from hospital. She hasn't had any problems post stroke thankfully. I am so greatful for my wonderful GP who organised an urgent MRI which is how we got the diagnossis. We spent 2 weeks at PMH and are now awaiting surgery in Sydney with Dr Stoodly. Our Vascular Nuro surgeon hasnt dealt with many cases so we are being reffered to Sydney. I can not put in words how greatful I am of the care we have had since diagnosis.
I would love to speak to people who have had dealings with Dr Stoodly and who have kids who have MoyaMoya. I feel so lost as it is hard getting answers because there seems to be so little known in Australia.
Look foward to hearing from people.
Kara

Hi there,
I am in Melbourne 42 years old and diagnosed last year my doctor is John Laidlaw. I have heard great things on this site about Prof Stoodley and am sure you are in the best hands. You will find lots of support and information on this site. I am waiting for my first operation which is now scheduled for the 28th June.
There are quite a few people from Australia on this site so know you are one of few but not alone by any means. Just look through all the information you can so you are prepared for you first appointment with Prof.Stoodley. If I can be of any help please pm me.
Regards
Maryanne

My daughter her surgery done by Dr. Stephen LEwis here in Florida.  He is from Perth Australia and he is leaving the US to go back to Australia.  He will be leaving Shands June 20th.  He doesn’t move to Australia till the new year and they are opening a new hospital that he is looking at vs. opening a private practice but hasn’t decided yet.
Dr. Lewis has a lot of experience with Moyamoya and has done quite a few surgeries.  Our loss is australia's gain.  I will be sure to post when I know where he will be practicing.  We are really going to miss him here.  My daughter will eventually need her left side done and she really wanted him to do it.  As an added bonus...he doesn't shave your head! My daughter had her surgery done by John Laidlaw at Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2009. He only took a narrow strip of hair too. Which was very important to a 17 year old. There are several people I have seen on this site that are from Australia.
Please email me if I can help you . I understand how overwhelming it is and the lack of information doesn't help. Ask lots of questions. Take care.
P.S. There was a segment on RPA last night about a woman in Sydney with Moyamoya. It showed her surgery last night and the follow up will be next week.

Hi all. I'm kiwi from Wellington and just had an initial appointment with John Laidlaw on Friday (22 June 12) for hopefully a surgery before September.  In my research Sydney was considered more experienced but Melbourne has a visiting doctor gaining experience in these operations from Wellington Hospital (Ales Aliashkevich) who conveniently will be returning to NZ in September so I can do my follow up with him.
