Anyone in Denmark??
Jul 11th, 2012 at 3:03pm

Hello everyone,
Our son Alexander (18 months old) had an ischemic stroke at the age of 9 mos. He has been checked for all sorts of genetic and blood conditions, but until now, we haven't got an answer as to what hit our until then very healthy boy.
After his 2nd control MRI (3 months after the stroke), the doctors could see that the arteries around the affected area where smaller than normal. After his 3rd scan a couple of weeks ago, they could see that they are now even smaller...
We were called for a talk with the specialist today and he suggested a PET scan as the next step and mentioned their hypothesis now is Moyamoya...
As expected, we have used our whole afternoon reading material on the net and worrying about our little son's future... as the message has suddenly gone from "that stroke was a once-in-a-lifetime thing" to "this might be a degenerative condition"...
Danmark sounds right now like a very little country, where cases are more than rare... but we were thinking maybe there's someone here who has experience with the system and would be willing to get in touch?
Thank you for reading so far and all the best for those with MM and your families.

Hi, I live in Belgium, where the chance of having MM is also very VERY slim!
So sorry to hear you also live in a country where there is so little known about this disease. I went to a university hospital here in Belgium where they had about 9 to 10 cases already. 9 were operated, 8 were succesfull. I  haven’t had the operation yet, because the disease hasn’t progressed enough yet.
Has something to do with the blood vessels (puff of smoke) that hven’t developped enough yet which is needed to flow part of the brain that has to be cut off for about 30 minutes during the operation, otherwise I could get serious damage because there is no oxygen going to some parts of the brain.

But what I wanted to say is that my neurologists and the ones in the university hospital have decided that together with specialists in Utrecht in the Neatherlands. They have doctors spacialized in MM. I think one of their specialists is Professor Regli. He’s Swedish or Norwegian, I think.

So if you can find a way to contact them or have your neurologist contact them  (I insisted to do  this with my neurologists) and have your info sent there. Maybe that’ll get you a little further.

I’ve been told Dr Steinberg (specialist in California) also gives second opinions just by watching the scans and so.

Good luck!

Thank you for the reply Nanstev.
We have actually been in touch with Prof. Steinberg in Stanford, and he's been kind enough to offer to take a look at what we have and give us his opinion.
I will do a bit of research on Regli.
Thanks again and good luck with your operation, when you get to it!
