Behavior changes after stroke/surgeries
Sep 13th, 2012 at 11:40am

Although my husband is on some pretty high doses of medications that are supposed to be for depression and mood stabilization.  However, he is completely different now than before.  At least, that is how it seems.  We have only been married for 3 years and he had his first stroke 6 months after being married and we spent much of the remaining time in and out of hospitals with multiple TIA's and major strokes.  We are a blended family (I have 3 children from a previous marriage and then he and I have a little one together) and it is hard to tell what is blended family issues that were really already there all along and what is possibly a result from his disease/surgeries/strokes.  Just looking to see if anyone else has experienced such.  I take my wedding vows seriously...but I also take my children's emotional/mental wellbeing seriously as well.  We are currently seperated and the stress/walking on egg-shells mentality is gone from our house.  It makes me sad that life  for my kids and for the little one is better now with his absence....considering I fought so hard after surgery complications to keep him alive.  Let me know if anyone can  relate.  Thanks
Shari

Hi Shari, I'm sorry to hear that you are having difficult times.  I have done a lot of looking online to find similar answers.  What I am finding is that it can and does sometimes affect the frontal lobe.  That can cause changes in personality, moods, impulsivity etc.  It's hard to say how much is from his Moyamoya and surgery.  Did he have his second surgery?  Seems like he was scheduled to see Dr. Steinberg.  I wish you the best.

What your Husband is experencing is not ouside of the normal after haveing a stroke. My srtoke was 0ne week after out honeymoon.

My husband said he saw a shift in my personality too. I am extreemly quick to anger expessaly when I a tiered. He discribes it as Sleepy induced terrets because I loose my words and start name calling him a f-word and other nasty things. My husband now understands that it may be related to a break down in my brain power since it only happens when I am tiered now. He watches for the sleepyness triggers and dicsusses the argument when I am rested. Becides that My husband has said I am more emotional then before too, but over time he has seen the ballance come back. I was very symilar to how you have discribed your husband. It will get better. We don't have childern so I don't know how that effects things. Best solution is time and patience.

I hope you and your husband get the help you need so your husband can start to get the emotional ballance back in check. I will pray for you, Husband, and your family.
Stay Strong and supportive,
Becky
