This may sound like a strange question....

I know we've talked about how heat affect some with MM,and it really is Kathleen's worst "enemy".Something I noticed a while ago but now am a little more concerned becuase it's been brought to my attention how dangerous this could be, is that Kathleen doesn't seem to sweat.there is a name for this it's Anhidrosis(spelling??).The heat just shuts ehr right down and she can't focus or concentrate.School work is near impossible when it gets even a little warm in the classroom.She avoids the heat as much as possible and won't even go outside if it's warm out.I always just chalked it up to the fact that she's ahd strokes and MM so it probably just tires her out but then I also noticed that I've never seen her sweat even a tiny bit.Has anyone else every noticed something like this happening? Is it just from the strokes or MM possibly?

Mary Grace,

Is your daughter on any anti-seizure medicines? I know of at least one that can cause lack of sweating (topamax). If she is taking an anticonvulsant - or any other prescription medication, for that matter - you might do some searching online for side affects.

Other than that I'm not sure I'm much help Undecided

Jenny, thanks so much for your reply.Kathleen's only meds right now are asprin and Synthroid (for hypothyroid).It's ahrd to tell whether maybe she's just never been hot enough to sweat(which I doubt that) or if it may be a problem.I just hate taking her to another doc,I've lost count of how many she now has.BUT I don't ever want to let anything go that may have serious consequences.

I completely understand about not wanting to see another doctor! We feel the same way with Daphne -- it gets very hard to keep track of all the appointments, and everytime she's in a Doctor's office, it seems like Daphne catches a bug!

I wonder if the decreased sweating could be from the hypothyroid. I have no idea -- just a thought. Maybe the doctor who prescribed the Synthroid might know something??

Good luck... I hope you get some information (preferably without having to see a new doctor!!).

Hi MaryGrace,

I just wanted to let you know that I too take Synthroid. As you may already know, I had thyroid cancer and had a total thyroidectomy so I have to take Synthroid daily for the rest of my life.... My doctors are continually adjusting my dosage; therefore, I have fluctured between being hypo and hyperthyroid..and it is NOT fun. I remember being jittery and having heart palpitations when I was hyperthyroid....and tired, having body aches and feeling cold when I was hypothyroid. It's a totally wierd feeling going from one extreme to the other.

Well, I symphathize with Kathleen...as if MM wasn't enough for us to deal with....

Thanks for your replies Jenny and Shan. Kathleen's been on Synthroid since she was 2 yrs old.In fact when she started to show the first signs of what owuld be later diagnosed as MM she was walking very unsteadily like she was drunk.The first thing they tested was ehr thyroid becasue it can amke you "unsteady".Of course this wasn't the problem.One reaction to the Synthroid can be excessive sweating.We've had her levels steady most of the time.We check it once a year.I've look at the symptoms of Hypothyroid and have never seen anything about any problems with not sweating,although when your thyroid is off it really messes up a lot of things. the worse part of it for us is the blood tests.I may just bring this up with her Primary Doc and see what he thinks.I'll need to make an appt.soon just to go over some things for school next year.One thing being asking for air conditioning.Jenny I knwo how hard those appointment are it seems we keep adding new specialists all the time I've lost track of how many,there's some I' never knew existed.LOL Whenever we go to a new one Kathleen asks if there will be a shot not just once but she'll ask over and over again until we get into the office.Thanks again you guys!

I know how hard doctors can be for kids. The only thing Tyler hated more than needles was sinus cultures. By 3-yrs.-old he knew what test were done where and would ask for them to take blood and not do a sinus culture. It was hard to watch him point to his arm and say there, not there and point to his nose.

I always told him he could scream as loud as he wanted, he just had to hold the arm they were poking still. Now at 14-yrs-old he doesn't mind needles too much, but still hates the doctor looking in his nose.

OK enough rambling, I hope you find out what is causing Kathleen's lack of sweat. I was never a sweater until I became an adult and if I got to hot I just felt lousy till I could get lots of water.
