Stroke post surgery
May 17th, 2008 at 6:42am

Our son had surgery on his right hemisphere but suffered a stroke on the left side two weeks post op. We were waiting between surgeries as the doctor recommended.

Does anyone have experience with this situation and study information on such a prognosis?

I'm sorry to hear that your son suffered this complication after surgery. When my daughter was undergoing her surgeries we experienced something similar. She was 5 yrs old at the time. She actually had a stroke the day before her first surgery. Four days after this surgery she had strokes on both sides, a very serious one on her right side(the surgery side) of the brian, not as severe on her left side. She had no use of her left side of her body, limited use of her right, and had lost most of her speech. It was devestating to say the least. She ahd her second surgery just a few days later and did very well with this one.The great news is she has been stroke free ever since it's been 6 yrs.she has also most of what she lost. It's been slow but steady progress. She was also born with Down Syndrome. I think this taught her early on that if you just work hard at it you can do anything you want. She never gives up and is very determined to do everything her peers do If I can answer any specific questions please let me know you can e-mail me direct at mgrace5@nycap.rr.com
Please know that your son and family are in my prayers.

Thanks for sharing your experience.  We're hopeful that this will not be a major setback.

My heart goes out to you all.

At age 50 I had a second stroke about 2 months post surgery. It was much like the original stroke...and I've been building up again. Am now (8 years later) doing well.

So yes, the post surgery strokes do happen.
and a tremendous amount of recovery can also happen.

My love to you all,

Linda
