Hello all

Hello all. I've been looking a guest on here for a couple of months (and FB too).

I'm in my 40s. Was diagnosed with MM a few months ago.

Near the end of september my peripheral vision went to pieces. Since I have diabetes I thought (and so did the opthamologist) that it was just that.

A couple of weeks after that, my right side was weak and I had trouble standing. Went to the hospital the next day, informing them I had a stroke. During my stay, I had an MRI, and was informed that I have had a couple of strokes (at least each hemisphere). They did a CT angio as well, and said nothing whowed up on that. They told me to see my family dr (even though he was a couple hundred miles away (as I had moved to the area) and gave me the option to be released for outpatient rehab, or wait in the hospital for 4+ months for a rehab bed to open (and maybe work with a physiotherapist about 1 hour a week while waiting.

So, since I had been given some exercises, I opted to be released. I thought since they weren't giving me any info, I would go back to where I had been, and see my family, and my dr.

So when I had family pick me up ( still couldn't see to drive) and came up here. Had another stroked within a day or so (but this time I really didn't recognize the symptoms - was a major headache). Saw my family dr, and he sent me right to the hospital (because of the symptoms). Differnet hospital, different doctors (though my dr had sent me with the reports) So this time, I had a TEE and a complete head angio.

I was informed by the neurologist that he and the radiologist believed it was MM.  So was in rehab for a couple of weeks, regaining the strength in my side (which was still weak)

Sent to a stroke specialist back in the first city. While in consultation, mention that I have been recieving headaches for years, . He wanted my to have a LP done, and wanted to check for vasculitis. Had to wait a month, but got it done.

Meanwhile, I have learned from my family dr, that since I had a lot of weight loss (over 60 pounds in 6 months without changing my diet) the stroke specialist  strongly confirmed that it seemed to be MM.

Now, I can slowly walk without the assistance of anything, and my rehab is nearly over. I am waiting to see the stroke specialist again (well, any neurologist really) and another opthamologist since my eyesight still isn't great. I have been off work for 4 months now, and wanting to get back to work.

I live in Canada, and so therefore have to rely on the government to pay for speialists and hospital states. It's all very frusatrating, because I have been told to wait, and we will let you know. I just want some answer.

Hi!!

So sorry you have been through so much. I would not wait..I know Moyamoya specialists are hard to come by in Canada...not sure where you live but scans can be sent to specialists for 2nd opinion. The neurosurgeon I have heard of in Toronto ON is Dr. Michael Tymianski at Toronto Western Hospital
West Wing 4-435
399 Bathurst Street
Toronto
Ontario
M5T 2S8
Phone: (416) 603-5896
Fax: (416) 603-5298
I have heard good things about him and I believe my daughter's pediatric neurosurgeon consults with him.
I also consulted via email with Dr. Steinberg of UCLA, Dr. Nadia Khan in Switzerland and Dr. Michael Scott in Boston. I would definitely consult with others.

Well, it was an interesting trip to the stroke neurologist.

He starts off apologizing for asking me to come down when there was nothing much to tell me. He didn't make the appointment, I phoned in and asked for one from his receptionish.
   and no
He says he thinks the strokes were due to my diabetes and not MM (possible, I will admit).

There were anamalous readings on the images, which he thinks are only due to the strokes (not MM)

He plans on waiting for 2 more months, which will be 6 months after when I initially went into the hospital. And then have another MRI and CT angio. And then wait another 6 months after that (1 year after inital hospitalization), for another copy of the tests.

When I was at the first  hospital, they gave me a CT angio, and the radiologist report said nothing showed. Then, when I was at the 2nd hospital (after the next stroke) they did a standard Angio, and the radiologist there, was the one who diagnosed MM. Then, if anything is ever shown on these tests, he wants a brain biopsy (he threated that beore - he just really wants to cut into my head). Now, from all I've read a CT angio doesn'talways show the best.

So, I will defenetly be seeking a 2nd opinion. Not sure exactly how the process will be, being up here, but I am going to start first thing tomorrow morning.
