Moyamoya and dental braces
May 24th, 2012 at 8:25am

Good-morning all,

My daughter will be needing braces in the near future--top and bottom teeth. We are almost 4 yrs post surgery and post stroke.  She will have EEG and MRI this summer......and likely not braces til fall. My concern is she already gets headaches on occasion.......and the stress and initial pain could aggravate that. She just turned 11. Has anyone had any issues with braces. I also worry if she ever needed an emergency MRI......I know they usually have someone at a hospital to remove braces but still the stress of it all. Any comments/experience I would appreciate. Thanks!

Destin got Invisilign.  Don't know if they would work for your daughter or not.  They weren't a lot more than regular braces.

My daughter had her braces put on at age 11 right after her pial synangiosis.  She had two angiograms during her time with the braces.  The orthodontist removed them, gave her a temporary retainer for the days around the testing and then put them back on.  She had them off permenately in January and now wears a retainer at night.  She did not have any problems that were out of the ordinary during her time wearing braces. We talked with her othodontist before we started treatment and explained that she may need to have them removed for testing and there was never a problem with it.  Good luck!

Shelbi got braces put on in January of 11. She normally has an MRI annually but since she hadn't had any trouble her neurologist said that she could go ahead and get them and have an MRI as soon as they come off as long as she didn't have any trouble in which case the orthodontist would have to get them off.  The orthodontist was cool with this and said it would be no problem. She also was going to try to have the braces off within a year, unfortunately Shelbi's teeth have not cooperated, we are getting close though so hopefully it will be soon.  She has had a few little issues that her neurologist is keeping an eye on but is not concerned to the point of yanking off braces. Something that scares me though is that at her last cleaning the dentist said she has a wisdom tooth trying to grow in (the wrong way) and the other ones were not in the right position either. So as soon as the braces come off they will repeat that x ray and hopefully she will not have to have them surgically removed, because we all no the threat of even a minor surgery on a patient with mm. Embarrassed
