Moya Moya and anesthesia guidelines
Jul 14th, 2017 at 8:07am

Hi all
It has been a long time since I was here. My daughter was diagnosed almost 20 years ago now. Her renal arteries and aorta were significantly affected. It seems they are acting up again and she is going for an arteriogram. That will be done under IV sedation. BUT if they decided to "fix" something it may be general anesthesia. It has been more than a decade since her last surgery and I wanted to see if the protocol was different.  Years ago they worried more about the CO2 levels than the oxygen levels.  My daughter did have a major stroke under general so This is a very touchy point for us.

Thanks
Michelle

Hi Michelle,

I am 5 years post STA/MCA bypass. I recently saw my Moyamoya doctor and the one point she made, above anything else, was that if I ever needed surgery, anesthesia was the most important part. She said my blood pressure must be maintained at a higher level than most.

During general anesthesia, it is common for blood pressure to drop. Anesthesiologists are trained to ensure it stays in a safe range. My safe range is much, much higher than someone without a bypass.

I hope this is helpful and I hope your daughter is well.
